I live outside the US — how do I get an ITIN?
Our Certified Acceptance Agent (CAA) partner verifies your passport in person, so you don't have to mail it to the IRS. The process is fully digital and remote; the ITIN typically arrives within 6–11 weeks.
Which documents do I need?
Valid passport (verified by the CAA), Form W-7 (we prepare it), and a justification (e.g. US LLC owner, will file Form 8938 etc.). You do NOT need to mail your original passport — our CAA verifies it locally.
Do I need an ITIN for Mercury or Stripe Atlas?
A Mercury Business account opens with EIN ONLY — no ITIN needed. Stripe Business also only requires EIN. ITIN is required for: personal US tax returns (1040-NR), some traditional banks, withholding refunds on US real-estate income.
How long does an ITIN stay valid?
An ITIN expires if not used on a tax return for 5 consecutive years and must be re-applied. If you file Form 1040 or 1040-NR every year it remains valid indefinitely.
How long does the process take, and what if it's rejected?
Standard IRS processing is 6–11 weeks; during peak (Feb–Apr) it can stretch to 12–14 weeks. If rejected, the IRS notice specifies which document/justification was insufficient; we respond (with additional documents or clarification) and manage a second application at no extra charge.
